Battery Care Guide
RC Battery Care Guide – Safe Charging, Storage & Tips
(Prepared by The Thing Shop)
1. Types of RC Batteries
-
NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) – Beginner-friendly, durable, less maintenance.
-
LiPo (Lithium Polymer) – Lightweight, powerful, longer runtimes, requires special care.
2. Charging Safety
-
Always use the correct charger (LiPo balance charger for LiPos).
-
Never leave batteries unattended while charging.
-
Charge on a fireproof surface, away from flammable items.
-
Use a LiPo-safe bag for added protection.
3. Storage Tips
-
NiMH → Store fully charged.
-
LiPo → Store at storage voltage (3.7–3.85V per cell).
-
Avoid storing batteries in extreme heat or cold.
-
Check batteries monthly if not in use.
4. Voltage Guide for LiPo Batteries
Cell Count | Full Charge | Storage Voltage | Do Not Discharge Below |
---|---|---|---|
2S (7.4V) | 8.4V | 7.6–7.7V | 6.0V |
3S (11.1V) | 12.6V | 11.4–11.6V | 9.0V |
4S (14.8V) | 16.8V | 15.2–15.4V | 12.0V |
5. Extending Battery Life
-
Don’t over-discharge LiPos — stop when you notice power drop.
-
Let batteries cool before recharging.
-
Keep packs clean and dry.
-
Cycle NiMH batteries occasionally to maintain performance.
6. Signs It’s Time to Replace a Battery
-
Swelling or puffiness (LiPo).
-
Cracked casing.
-
Cells won’t balance or won’t hold charge.
-
Run times drastically reduced.
